Jessica Alba will topline modern-day fable “An Invisible Sign of My Own.”

Silverwood Films and iDeal Partners Film Fund closed a financing deal for the pic over the weekend at the Toronto Film Festival.

Filmmaker Marilyn Agrelo (”Mad Hot Ballroom”) begins lensing the film, based on Aimee Bender’s tome, next month from a screenplay by Pam Falk and Mike Ellis (”The Wedding Planner”). It is her first feature directorial outing since “Ballroom” (2005).

“Invisible” revolves around a young woman who has retreated from the world and is consumed by numbers and math. Things begin to change when she becomes a second-grade math teacher.

Producers are Jana Edelbaum, Falk, Ellis and Silverwood’s Lynette Howell. Rachel Cohen of iDeal and J2 Pictures’ Jason Felts and Justin Berfield exec produce.

Endeavor’s indie film unit, led by Graham Taylor, will handle domestic rights to the pic. Kimmel Intl. will handle foreign rights. Alba was last in theaters with “The Love Guru” and “The Eye.”

August 28th, 2008 • Filed under News & Projects

The competition among TV networks, movie studios and A-list stars can be fierce, but the fight against cancer will unite them on Sept. 5.

More than 60 celebrities will participate in Stand Up to Cancer, a live fund- and awareness-raising television special that will air simultaneously on ABC, NBC and CBS.

Jessica Alba, Halle Berry, Jack Black, Sheryl Crow, Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Garner, Diane Keaton, Rob Lowe, Sharon Osbourne, Keanu Reeves and Carrie Underwood are among the stars set to appear, it was announced Wednesday.

They’ll join previously announced participants including Salma Hayek, Scarlett Johansson, Lance Armstrong, America Ferrera, Meryl Streep, Charlize Theron and Forest Whitaker.

The celebrities, along with network news anchors Katie Couric, Charles Gibson and Brian Williams, will deliver an evening of “edutainment,” said executive producer Laura Ziskin, a cancer survivor who helped establish the event and the nonprofit group behind it.

• • Jessica Alba Starring in ‘Barbarella’ Remake?
July 10th, 2008 • Filed under News & Projects

Until we get further confirmation, I’d take this piece of information with a grain of salt, but nevertheless, the article is posted below if you’d like to read it.

From CinemaBlend comes word that hot off the heels of Robert Rodriquez kicking Rose McGowan to the curb… Jessica Alba will star in the upcoming Barbarella remake. WOW! You will recall that the studio shelfed the movie because they wanted a bigger name on the bill. I have to admit Alba is a bigger name and one that will lure in a certain demographic of horn dog males! So a long while back we told you via reader Ashs Missing Hand that Robert Rodriquez’s Barbarella had been dropped by Universal. The source was the New York Observer that said the movie was dropped because of the female lead, namely Rose McGowan;

“It’s sort of embarrassing for everyone involved. … No one thinks Rose can carry the movie, but Robert won’t listen.” The paper adds that producer Dino De Laurentiis “wants to back Robert and his vision. But Robert’s vision is blurred by Rose.”

So there you have it. Seems that Barbarells is still on but with a much higher profile leading lady in the talks.
